Now, here’s something you don’t see every day.
It’s a ring made completely out of a single diamond. Yes, including
where the band would normally be.
Billed as “the world’s first diamond ring” by Swiss jeweler Shawish, this dazzling 150-carat example of precision faceting was accomplished with the assistance of laser technology and took one year to complete.
The copyrighted ring has a price tag of about $70 million and was unveiled at BaselWorld 2012 last week, the annual watch and jewelry trade show staged annually in Switzerland.
“A ring made entirely of a faceted diamond has always seemed like a fantasy,” said Mohamed Shawish, president of Geneva-based Shawish Jewellery. “To create the perfect diamond ring is the epitome of art.”
From a technical perspective, cutting a hole through the middle of a huge diamond is a daunting task very rarely seen in the world of diamond cutting and faceting. Shawish had to purchase specialty laser equipment to ensure the diamond wouldn’t be damaged during the process.
